The development of the project of Te Whare Wānanga o Ngāwha, Northland in 2002, was in part a response to facilitate a positive social, economic and cultural development  on the historic healing grounds of Ngāwha. This project was initiated in the shadow of the newly established Ngawha Prison, heralded at the time by the government, as positive response to crime and economic depression in the regional north.
